All Seniors Need These 6 Vaccines

By Mark Silvanic, 9:00 am on

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend the following six vaccines for all seniors. Regular vaccines are important for overall health and they can help your loved one avoid many serious, and potentially fatal, conditions.

1. Shingles

Shingles is one of the most common conditions among seniors. It causes a painful skin rash and its side effects can linger throughout their lives. The vaccine can help protect against the disease and lessen the severity of symptoms if infection does occur.

2. Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap)

Colorado Springs home caregivers should encourage seniors to receive a Tdap booster every ten years throughout their lives. Most notably, pertussis (also known as whooping cough) is making resurgence in the United States and can be deadly for certain segments of the population. This vaccine is especially important for those with chronic respiratory infections or who will be around babies under the age of one.

3. Pneumococcal

This vaccine protects against a variety of bacterial infections that can be deadly for seniors. It is often recommended to protect against certain types of pneumonia. Speak with your loved one’s doctor about which type of vaccine he or she recommends.

4. Influenza

The CDC recommends that every individual who is able receive a flu vaccine each year. While mild in healthy adults, the flu is often fatal for seniors and those with other health conditions. Ensure your loved one’s doctor notifies you when his or her seasonal vaccine becomes available.

5. Varicella

This vaccine is recommended if your loved one never contracted chickenpox earlier in life. Chickenpox can cause serious complications in adults and seniors because their immune systems tend to be more vulnerable.

6. Hepatitis

Hepatitis A and B are spread in different ways, but they are both preventable with vaccines. Both are recommended if your loved one was not vaccinated earlier in life.

It is important to discuss these vaccinations with your loved one’s medical team.
