Encouraging Caregiver Wellbeing for the New Year

By Mark Silvanic, 9:00 am on

Live-in and hourly caregivers in Colorado Springs are always so generous with their time to take care of their senior loved ones. If you are a family caregiver, make sure you take some time to care for yourself to make 2017 a little better for you and your aged loved one.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Many caregivers ignore the fact that they are hungry so that they can take care of their senior loved ones. Avoid this habit this year by eating three balanced meals each day. Focus on incorporating a variety of seasonally available fruits and vegetables to boost your intake of essential vitamins and minerals.

Be Active

At-home caregivers in Colorado Springs often find that it is difficult to get enough physical exercise each day. You don’t necessarily have to leave the house to get exercise, however. Go for a brisk walk or exercise to a DVD or television show to get your cardio. Additionally, use good lifting techniques to protect your back from injury.

Learn Something New

Make a list of the things that you have always been curious about and pick one from the list to investigate each day. You can watch a television show, read an informational magazine or book or look up information on the internet. Once you have learned what you want to know, then pick a new subject and begin again.

Get Creative

Research shows that people who are creative tend to be happier. Therefore, spend a part of each day doing something that fosters your creativity. Paint a picture, play a musical instrument or make a favorite craft. It does not matter as long as you spend a little bit of time each day to stimulate your mind.

Connect with Nature

Unless the weather is absolutely lousy, spend part of each day outside. Your body needs the vitamin D to maintain its peak performance. If you absolutely cannot go outside, then spend some time taking care of a plant or watching birds eat at a bird feeder.

Talk

Everyone needs one special friend that they can talk to each day. This friend should be a trusted confidant that you can tell exactly how you are feeling. Try to spend a part of each conversation focusing on a topic outside of your caregiver responsibilities.
