Soothing Arthritis Pain During Winter

By Mark Silvanic, 9:00 am on

If you care for a senior with arthritis, then you may hear him or her complain more about it in the wintertime. Changes in barometric pressure causes many people’s arthritis hurt worse during the damp cold winter months. If this is true of a senior that you love, then you may want to have them try some of these home remedies that some Colorado Springs care professionals recommend.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Drinking apple cider vinegar may help the body get rid of toxins while giving the body the minerals that it needs. Live-in Colorado Springs care professionals should encourage seniors to drink a little apple cider vinegar mixed with water and honey each day to get these benefits.

Mustard Oil and Onion Juice

Mustard oil mixed with onion juice can be rubbed on joints to help alleviate swelling. This mixture helps to stimulate blood flow and may reduce swelling. In order to have your senior try it, combine the two and then rub it on the joint. Cover the area with plastic wrap and then with moist towels. Leave in place for up to 30 minutes for maximum effect.

Turmeric

Regular consumption of turmeric has been shown to be effective in reducing swelling caused by arthritis. Mix a spoonful in a glass of milk and have your senior drink it. Many seniors say it helps to warm the milk and drink it right before going to bed.

Cinnamon

Some seniors find that cinnamon helps keep their arthritis pain away, so you may suggest that your senior try it. One-half teaspoon of cinnamon can be put in a glassful of water to drink. Alternatively, make a mixture of cinnamon and honey so that the senior can massage it onto sore joints.

Spices

Research out of Korea suggests that sniffing common kitchen spices like rosemary, marjoram and peppermint may be effective in helping stop the body’s reaction to pain. Meanwhile, research in Japan shows that sniffing lavender has a similar effect.

Mediterranean Diet

Helping seniors choose a healthy diet with lots of fish and fresh fruits can help to stop arthritis. Research out of Sweden even suggests that seniors who made this switch from fast food to a healthier Mediterranean diet were able to return to doing physical activities that they had stopped doing because of arthritis pain.
