Seniors who feel they are limited by their age can benefit from hearing inspirational stories of other people their age who have accomplished some amazing feats. Colorado Springs senior care experts have put together a list of 4 elderly explorers who are wonderful examples of how determination and passion for life can keep a person vibrant and active in the golden years.
1. Reinhold Messner
Born in 1944, Messner made the first solo climb of Mount Everest without the aid of oxygen tanks. Considered the greatest climber of all time, Messner has accomplished the amazing feat of climbing all the 14 mountains on Earth that exceed 8,000 miles above sea level. When he isn’t going on amazing climbing adventures, he spends a great amount of time at the Messner Mountain Museum, which he founded.
2. Ray Woodcock
Woodcock is a 74-year-old senior thrill-seeker who scaled Mount Etna and two other active volcanoes in Sicily. He even dared to climb inside one of the craters to get an epic picture. When he was 70 years old, he celebrated his age by leaping 30,000 feet from a plane. To fund his many trips, Woodcock regularly drives a taxi so every bit of money raised by sponsors can go to charity.
3. Yuichiro Miura
Born in 1932, Miura is a senior adventurer who traveled to all seven continents and skied down the highest mountains in each one by the time he was 54. At the age of 80, he accomplished the remarkable feat of becoming the oldest person to scale Mount Everest. The next epic adventure he is planning is to ski down Mount Cho Oyu in the Himalayas by the time he is 85 years old.
4. Anna Czerwińska
Born in 1949, Czerwińska is an amazing Polish explorer who has been conquering the highest mountains with mainly all-women teams for over 34 years. She climbed the highest point of Mount Everest at the age of 50. At the time, she was known as the oldest woman ever to climb Mount Everest. In 2001, she climbed both Cho Oyu and Lhotse, and in 2006 she conquered Makalu, which is the fifth highest mountain in the world.
