Paying Respects to the World's Oldest Person in Colorado Springs, CO

Susannah Mushatt Jones, who was the oldest confirmed person living in the world, passed away in her sleep after a brief illness on May 12th. She lived to be 116 years old, a feat that many seniors and live-in Colorado Springs caregivers hope to achieve. Jones lived through three centuries and countless historical changes during her long full lifetime.

Jones was born on July 6, 1899 to a family of sharecroppers in Alabama. Her grandparents had been slaves, but one of them managed to live for 117 years reportedly. Jones dreamed of leaving the family farm and becoming a teacher, but she could not afford tuition after being accepted into the Tuskegee Institute. However, Jones was determined to leave the country and she moved to New York City in 1923. Jones became a private governess for wealthy families, and even though she only had a little money to spare, she used it to help her relatives and establish a college scholarship fund.

Jones was briefly married before divorcing her husband in 1933 and she never had any children. However, her nine siblings had many children, so Jones was a fond aunt to over 100 nieces and nephews. After retiring in 1965, Jones moved in with her niece and helped to babysit her niece’s son while she started a career as a doctor. This niece, Dr. Lavilla Watson, was taking care of Jones before she passed away.

Though Jones had limited mobility, sight, and hearing after the age of 100, she was otherwise perfectly healthy. Each morning, Jones would have bacon, eggs, and grits for breakfast, and the only medicine she took was a multivitamin and high-blood pressure medication. She never smoked or drank alcohol, despite living in New York during the roaring ‘20s, and she always tried to sleep ten hours each night. According to Jones, the key to her long lifestyle was that “I surround myself with love and positive energy.”
